In 1983 I attended a multi-day photography workshop with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Haas" target="_blank">Ernst Haas.</a>
Haas was a famous photography and pioneer photojournalist. In the photo above, Haas is setting in the front with the black sweater. I am fifth
from the left on the back row. Ernst died a few years later in 1986, but
those few days with him and the other serious photographers from around
the country was a wonderful learning experience. Actually, I have had a
number of similar experiences where I have sat at the feet of great
teachers where I could learn and be challenged. <br /><br />Here is a Ernst Haas quote, <em>"I
never really wanted to be a photographer. It slowly grew out of the
compromise of a boy who desired to combine two goals-explorer or
painter. I wanted to travel, see and experience. What better profession
could there be than the one of a photographer, almost a painter in a
hurry, overwhelmed by too many constantly changing impressions? But all
my inspirational influences came much more from all the arts than from
photo magazines."</em><br /><br />By the way, one of the photos I made
during that workshop was the cover of Charles David Smart's CD "Return
to the River" just last year.<br /><br />I believe that life-long learning
and continuing education is the secret to continuing to have a long and
impactful life. Photography has a 176 year-old history, but there are
new things to learn and new technologies to explore every day. Staying
up on what's new and at the same time staying grounded in the tradition
makes for a rewarding career.</div>
<div _mce_style="font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt;">
<span _mce_style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 11pt;" style="font-size: 11pt; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />When
Ernst Haas started shooting color, Kodachrome was ISO 8, so exposure
times were tediously slow. Today pro photographers regularly shoot
digital color at ISO 6400. I wonder what Haas would be doing with that
kind of speed and versatility. </span></div>

<div>
Photoshop is a high performance image editing tool sold by Adobe.
Adobe is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Photoshop this year, so in
computer and software terms it is definitely a venerable product. I
began using Photoshop shortly after it was introduced in 1990 so it has
become like an old friend to me.</div>
<br />
<div>
Since the beginning of photography in 1839, photographers have
been editing images and faking situations to appear as something else.
There is even a genre of 19th century photography featuring oversized
vegetables on wagons, men climbing on huge watermelons and the like.
There are some historical photographs that we now realize were made in
the darkroom by combining several images. For example, I owned an
original print of the above photo for years before I realized that it
was probably faked. With Photoshop these types of things are easier and
more believable than ever before.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Recently
Photoshop has been getting a bad rap as a tool that allows people to
appear thin, wrinkle free and without imperfections. Photographers have
always strived to make people look their best, so this is not
unexpected. The problem is that it produces unrealistic expectations as
people compare themselves to published photos that have been overly
retouched.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Photoshop is also a great tool for
repairing damaged or faded images. I first began using Photoshop 25
years ago because of my interest in repairing old photos. Today this is a
big part of my business. As Photoshop has improved over the years,
restoration techniques have improved as well. Today we are able to do
things that we only dreamed of 10 or 15 years ago. Additionally, we now
have access to very high quality paper that was unavailable even a few
years ago. The best papers today should last for hundreds of years. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
If
you have old, damaged or faded treasured photographs or other art that
you would like to have copied or restored, give me a call.</div>

I have been getting good feedback from my black and white photos
that have been at Scooter's Coffee at College and Antioch for a few
weeks. Then last Sunday, we went to <a href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001p2pkDNTX81LNONa4CUT8IRUfa9UoomJhqZMO6oNTxhLu4S8mA4McnJzfsj_uSiyz8fO9sfTVIjwuxsSovJS-7bwtvc22WRknVbYqlTZdbDE0qzifroii91UWoVxGblRhVwwQt0AQVQ5fHewwjAj1Fjw0-4wvPEA3i_v9yJZl4FY=&c=3XlxaRyMiqIgC3n7fp5kyE1RMH2EAZ6oCMs8A7jqDfbJzbjjtqqU-g==&ch=t9DrLA0cO1sVii9lwj1IcYHVaB_RVAuVcumpFMEHC2qKhC_WAuwJ7g==" shape="rect" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Waldo Pizza</a>
in Lees Summit and hung a number of large color photos with musical
themes. They will be there for two months. Be sure to go in for some
great pizza and see my photos.<br />

If you have a business or public space that would be available for an art display, let me know. We can talk about it.</div>

My photo of the old "Texas Top Hands" Flexible bus that I made
while in Austin a few years ago was on the cover of the March issue of <a href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001p2pkDNTX81LNONa4CUT8IRUfa9UoomJhqZMO6oNTxhLu4S8mA4McnO5IL5BoAhFEuj6_MMCLI4Qw4xuA-R8eLKeNBtHfuirsIzPYKbSCnEqXMCWB1q68g40piDCefvc9fe-L5YayOALnTjeabXMtFXU0YRG8vofBIUSBy50w9wWdWCm9_rl5-0TiXbEisirL&c=3XlxaRyMiqIgC3n7fp5kyE1RMH2EAZ6oCMs8A7jqDfbJzbjjtqqU-g==&ch=t9DrLA0cO1sVii9lwj1IcYHVaB_RVAuVcumpFMEHC2qKhC_WAuwJ7g==" shape="rect" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Johnson County Lifestyle </a>magazine.
This was their "arts" issue, so there was a feature about me and
various arts organization in the area. The article about the Shawnee
Mission Strolling Strings also featured my photographs.</div>

I have been planning to update my primary web site for sometime
now. I finally got it up and running this week. I will be turning off
the old one soon. Note that ".photography" is the upper domain name, not .net or .com or
anything like that. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I
am trying to make it cleaner and easier to navigate. I also added

<strong>Marketing 101 </strong></div>
<div style="font-size: 11pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 11pt;">
Stanley Marcus of Nieman-Marcus once said,
"Half of advertising is wasted, I just don't know which half." It turns
out that a lot of advertising is not only wasted, but is very harmful as
well.<br /><br />For example, I have owned about half a dozen Oldsmobiles
including the gorgeous 1977 Ninety-eight above. GM came out with an ad
campaigning declaring, "This is not your father's Oldsmobile," implying
that the millions of Oldsmobile owners were all a bunch of old fogeys.
They got the message and quit buying Oldsmobiles and a century old brand
died, or more correctly, was killed by poor management and worse
marketing.<br /><br />An even worse marketing technique is rewarding new
customers while punishing your current customers. We are seeing several
nationally known companies offering huge discounts to new customers
while insisting that their long established loyal customers pay full
price. They result is that the loyal customers are not coming back. The
marketing guru, Seth Godin, addressed this in his latest blog titled, <a href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001RY6C61AnnjxEFQLj-xMf53PwbC7dkhOdx3VzaxBv5t4-KYgq6C1-BMPfNrxPt-arsTcPYOjOz-1Xl42VTyAmHqG_aE4zYKwx_1mCM5p3Yy5FAHXl2xgSL1PtxCUmSt0wSteqXRSAbd7iX0QhUN_3pUWLUaaaueyBT-coN6XfN_6O8NAD2lIgi7mmg-wl2vmIRbuR7GzIdpTsTKRtX93H578mqQ0s0oOEkOLBFBcLqnYLxonQcbM6KwDX8j91d9L9&c=x8ZWJtGB4wYVoNpQGU77aIQKAElRLmjZ_R31gv4Z2_ivP7NqsOqGzg==&ch=E7ag8l0FSfcjF13d7T2T3DDGz-E827kMjzJe2u9gsdCsM0oR6b_OGQ==" shape="rect" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">"Stupid is the brand killer."</a><br /><br />A
much better plan is to reward loyalty. This includes things like
frequent flyer miles, discounts printed on cash register receipts for
dollars off your next purchase and loyalty cards at grocery stores. When
I managed a coffee house, we started a successful punch card system
that made every tenth drink free. A coffee house I frequent gives your
entire order free if you buy or add $25 to a gift card. This insures
repeat business and rewards regular customers.<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 11pt;">
I have a published price list. New customers
know what the cost will be, but I sometimes give discounts for loyalty
to clients that I have been doing business with for several years. I
would never give a discount to a new client that I would not give to a
loyal client that I consider a friend. This just makes sense. </div>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 11pt;">
If you have old photos that need to be
copied, saved or restored, please call. You will get a fair price and be
certain that you are paying the same as the next person with the same
requirements. </div>
</div>
<div style="font-size: 11pt;">

In the 1960’s and early ‘70s, Nikon ruled. Nikon claimed
that 98% of all photographs in newspapers and magazines were made with Nikon
cameras and few people contested that claim.</div>

Many camera repairmen only worked on Nikons, considering
other makes not worth fixing. Additionally, Nikon encouraged people who shot
more than 500 rolls of film per year to have their cameras cleaned and adjusted
annually. It was against this background that a major consumer magazine decided
to run a test of 35mm cameras. They surveyed camera repair shops and compared
the types of cameras they serviced against production numbers and concluded
that Nikons were extremely unreliable and therefore unacceptable.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I first heard about this when a man came into the camera
shop where I was working and said he didn’t care what kind of camera he bought
as long as it wasn’t a Nikon because they were the worst. We all started
laughing because we thought he was kidding. (We were the largest Nikon dealer
in the area and sold mainly to professional photographers.) But he was serious
having just read the review in Consumer Reports.</div>

I was just out of college where I took a lot of statistics
courses and I knew that wrong assumptions or wrong data can make you look
pretty stupid. Consumer Reports numbers were right, but their assumptions and
conclusions were exactly opposite of reality.</div>

I think of this whenever I see a list of most reliable cars,
best Bar-B-Que or best movies. Box office sales don’t make good movies any more
than long service intervals make good cars. We are generally better off
ignoring such non-consequential data, because each of us is different with
different requirements. As the saying goes, “Your mileage may vary.”</div>

I can’t tell you what percentage of my clients love their

<b>Citroen DS-21</b></div>

When I was in college, one of the professors had a French
car called a Citroen DS. It was bright yellow and very distinctive looking. I
became fascinated by the Citroen and found out that it was an extremely
innovative car. </div>

When it came out in 1955 it was years ahead of other makes
in handling, braking, and styling. It was one of the few front-wheel drive
luxury cars of the era. I test drove one at a Wichita dealer in 1970, but
decided not to buy it simple because I needed a pickup more than a French
luxury car. For about the same money I got a new Ford F-100.</div>

The DS series remained in production until 1975. It came in
second in a vote among auto journalist as the most beautiful car of the 20th
century.</div>

When Louise and I visited Paris in 1983, the city was fogged
in for the entire week we were there. We never saw the top of the Eifel tower,
but we looked everyday just in case the weather cleared for minute and we could
get a glimpse of the top.</div>

One day as we were walking by I saw an old Citroen DS
sitting by the curb. By 1983 the DS was just another old car, but to me it was
a find. I got out my old Plaubel Veriwide and made one exposure of the Citroen
and the fogged in Eifel tower. It has become one of my all time favorite photos.</div>

Plaubel was a German specialty camera manufacture. They made
less than 2,000 Veriwides between 1959 and 1965. It had a 47mm Super-Angulon Schneider
lens which gave a 100 degree coverage on a 6x10 cm frame. This is seven <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>shots on a roll of 120 film.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I don’t recall ever seeing another one other
than the one I had. I owned it for about 10 years and have a lot of great
photos that I made with that camera including this Citroen/Eifel Tower photo. I
think I traded it to C&J Photo for a new Canon SLR in the late ‘80s.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Castel Enchante<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was late afternoon when we drove into Nice. We still had
plenty of time to find our hotel and go out for dinner. The directions we had
turned out to be less than reliable as we drove around looking for something
that sounded familiar. We were also confounded by the lack of street signs.
Very few streets in Nice are marked, and when they are the system seems pretty
random. We eventually stumbled across a sign that was on our map and by
combining our wits we were reasonably convinced that we had found the street
leading to our inn.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The web-site said the small inn was close-in with great
views of the city, so we knew we were looking for a hill. As the winding road
started to climb our confidence soared. By now it was dark and we were all past
hungry. But very soon the road narrowed to one lane and began to deteriorate.
There was no place to turn around because the mountain was on one side a sheer
drop was on the other. As the road got steeper I realized that we were losing
traction. If I stopped, we might not be able to get going again on the loose
gravel. Then we leveled off and there was a light. It was an old house. A lady
came out with a couple of large dogs. We asked (in French) if this was Castel
Enchante. She replied that we had passed it on the way up the mountain. She
then walked over to the edge and pointed down.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Back in the car, we edged our way down the sloping road that
seemed barely hanging to the side of the hill. Then we saw the small sign
tacked to a post only visible from this direction that read “Hotel Rooms.” We
turned in the drive which was about six feet wide and about a 45 degree angle
up. I gunned the little diesel engine and popped the clutch. I then slammed on
the brakes at the crest and slid into small spot inches from going over the
cliff. We looked around and saw a light coming through the trees, so I
dispatched my companions to see if this was really the Castel. They returned a
few minute later while I was still gathering my senses, saying we had found it.
They wisely chose to walk from there, since me or the car making it any further
was anything but certain. I was told to just park the car in the parking lot
and come on in.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I got out and surveyed the situation and realized that there
was another equally steep and narrow road behind me. After a series of
three-point turns, I climbed the hill and slid in behind an aging BMW. I
figured that it either belonged to the innkeeper or a previous guest who
decided that abandoning the car there wasn’t a bad idea.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We were shown to our room in the beautiful 16th century
mansion where I collapsed on the bed. As I waited for the blood to return to my
knuckles, going out for dinner seemed like the last thing I wanted to do.
Instead we dined on wine and chocolate accumulated on the trip.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The next day we awoke to a find ourselves in a beautiful
house with a lovely garden, and a gorgeous view of the city. After a great
breakfast and conversation we decided it was time to see if we could make it
down the hill. The world looks better when you are well-fed and the sun is
shining. But in the daylight it was obvious that the Lord was clearly guiding
us, because the road was every bit as treacherous as it had seemed the night
before.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We drove along the Mediterranean to Monaco where we pretended
to be royalty, eating like kings. On the way back we stopped in old town Nice
for more amazing food, putting off as long as possible the trip back up the
mountain.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By now we knew what to expect, but this time there were
screams of terror from the back seat, with some suggesting that they might want
to walk. I realized that the night before my companions were too scared to
utter a sound. By the third day I was picturing myself battling it out with Al
Unser on the Pikes Peak Hill-climb, as I smoked up the hill, sliding around the
hair-pin turns with the Michelins clinging to the side of the mountain. I was
not sure my companions would ever get in a car with me again.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The next day was to be the autoroute back to Paris, but we
wisely chose to take some back roads, winding through vineyards and enjoying
the people and culture of the South of France.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I understand that there are people who would rather stay
home. Sorry, I would rather scare my friends in the back of a Toyota on the
French Riviera.</div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
When I was in college I bought a couple of old Leicas just
for fun. One was from the 1930’s and the other was post-war. Not what you would
call modern cameras.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I started working for Kenny Young at Ben’s Camera Exchange
in downtown Kansas City in 1971. Kenny was an avid camera collector and I got
quite serious about learning about old camera and the history associated with
them. I began by reading all the books I could find about the history of
photography and cameras.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I heard about a book called “Glass, Brass & Chrome, a
History of American 35mm Cameras.” I mentioned it to a customer who worked at
the Kansas City Library. The next day he brought me a copy of the book. When I
asked him when it was due, he said not to worry about. I read the book and put
it on my bookshelf. Years later, after I became a Christian, I saw the book and
realized that it was stolen from the library. I took it back downtown and
dropped it in the book return. I then tracked down another copy of the book and
paid about $50 for it. Well worth it to have a clear consequence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After I started my own business and began having spare
money, I started buying classic cameras. I shopped Shutterbug Magazine and
traveled the country to camera shows. Eventually I owned hundreds of cameras,
many unique and of great interest to collectors.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In 1990 I opened a Photography Museum in the lobby of Mathis
Photo Inc. at 7801 Floyd, Overland Park, KS. After about five years, I began to
sense that the cameras were becoming a chore to maintain if not a burden. Plus
I went to a camera show in Independence. It was at a Holiday Inn. There were
about 25 dealers setting around talking cameras and about six customers, none
of whom looked like they were planning to spend any money. I then drove up the
street to a gun show. There were hundreds of dealers with thousands of people
inside and a line out the door.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They
were all waiving cash and trying to buy all sorts of weapons including military
style assault rifles that I thought were illegal. The contrast couldn’t have
been greater. I realized that the world had changed and nobody was going to get
excited about old cameras. Guys would rather pretend they were Wyatt Earp or
Rambo than Ansel Adams.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I asked an international camera dealer friend named Roger
Reinke to stop by the next time he was in Kansas City. I sold him about half of
my collection. I didn’t have any seller’s remorse, so I had him come back and
sold him most of the rest. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With the advent of the internet and eBay, I sold a few more.
I now have just a couple of the most attractive ones left. Some of the most
expensive cameras were not necessarily display worthy, only rare or
historically significant.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In 1996 I decided to shift my pastime to music after 25 year
away from playing. I still teach a few classes on the history of photography
and have a little bit of classic equipment to show, but I just haven’t seen an
outpouring of excitement for historically significant cameras in the past 30
years. Maybe they will come back someday. </div>

<b>Oldsmobile Toronado</b></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have always loved cars. Not just for the freedom of
movement and the ability to go wherever I want whenever I want, but for their
beauty and engineering.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, whenever it came time to buy a new car,
practicality always won out. In fifty years I have owned thirty-five cars, but
none were really outrageous like a Corvette or a Porsche.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In the late seventies, I decided that I
needed to buy a car just for fun, so we went to the Kruse Classic Car Auction and
came home with a low mileage 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Toronado came out in 1966 and was an engineering tour de
force. It was a huge high-powered front-drive two-door luxury car. Later the
Mercedes Benz chief said that Mercedes did not make front- drive cars because
front-wheel drive would not hold up with high output engines. By this point GM
had already sold 500,000 400 hp front-wheel drive Toronados and Cadillac
Eldorados without a single drive train failure. I guess the Daimler guys had
not got in the habit of looking past their front doors yet.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The 1966 Toronados were gorgeous and kept getting better
though 1970. The 1971s were worse and went downhill with the rest of General
Motors. Toronados, and eventually all Oldsmobiles, were allowed to die without
serious corporate support.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Since I liked cars, I thought I should be able to work on
them as well. I took a few auto repair courses at Johnson County Community
College but didn’t really excel. 95% of the repairs I attempted ending up being
redone by the dealer within months. I could change the oil and rotate the tires
and I could change spark plugs if I could see them.<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have since learned that my skills were only slightly
behind the average mechanic at a franchise auto service business or even an
independent garage. In the past ten or fifteen years, every repair I have had
done by an independent garage or national franchise has had to be redone by the
dealer within a year. I don’t believe that most mechanics are dishonest, merely
incompetent. Considering the complexity of modern cars, this is to be expected.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
Proverbs 22: 29 says, “See a man skilled in his work? He
will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” That is because
there are so few really skilled people. I am more convinced all the time that
our skills, more than anything else, determine our status in life.</div>

A portrait client said something funny to me a few weeks
ago. She said that she was surprised that there were still professional
photographers around since we now have digital.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I am still trying to figure out what assumptions she had
that would cause her to say that. After all, professionals were the first to
adopt digital photography in the mid-nineties. Would she suggest that since
there are now Walgreen’s on every corner we don’t need doctors, or that there
is no need for architects or contractors now that we have Home Depot and Lowes?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I think she was assuming that photography is mainly a
technical pursuit and that a photographer is mainly a technician. If that were
true the biggest challenge to professional photography would have been the
original Kodak and roll film introduced in 1888. The Kodak ushered in the idea
of the casual snap-shooter and also the photo-finishing industry. All of a
sudden, anybody could make photographs.</div>

Film improved over the next century until it was about as
good as it was going to get and a totally new approach was needed. Digital

Professional photographers don’t just have better equipment
or know a little bit more about technique; they bring a well-trained eye and
usually years of experience. Buying an expensive camera doesn’t mean that you
will be able to make photographs as good as a person who has taken their
natural gift and developed it through study and years of practice, to the
point where they can make pictures that convey feeling and emotion or move
people to change the world.</div>

I quickly fell in love with wide-angle lenses. The wider the better.</span></p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> <span style="font-size:100%;">Wide-angle is the opposite of telephoto. It is any lens that gives a field of view wider than about 45 degrees. </span></p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> <span style="font-size:100%;">In the 80's & '90's it practically became an obsession with me as I bought a number of specialty cameras with names like Plaubel Veriwide and Widelux. </span></p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> <span style="font-size:100%;">I still love wide-angle lenses. One of the main reasons to buy a camera with interchangeable lenses is to be able to use some of the marvelous wide-angle lenses that are available. </span></p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> <span style="font-size:100%;">Alternately, multiple pictures can be spliced together to form an extreme wide view. The above photo of the interior of Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is made from three images merged together forming a view of about 180 degrees. </span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> <span style="font-size:100%;">Most people discourage using wide-angle lenses for portraits because they tend to be unflattering, but in photography, it is OK to break the rules. Below is a photo of steel guitar player Fred Uzzell made with a 16mm lens on a Pentax which gives an angle of view of about 90 degrees. I was standing less than a foot away from the front edge of the steel guitar.</span></p><p style="margin-bottom:0px"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw09GKgFOlmaO38mWTM2MQnT3bLzsNSnyM-EKgkC0iudWZb5gRCSP49N-a9QbL89VSO1JXJBo1-ethFfI1-obmEWiM3GPqnixNU48h1l0Yas8NH-_1IsC1Ss7yKEFVZYT8HlqKAQq9fEU/s1600/Fred-400.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw09GKgFOlmaO38mWTM2MQnT3bLzsNSnyM-EKgkC0iudWZb5gRCSP49N-a9QbL89VSO1JXJBo1-ethFfI1-obmEWiM3GPqnixNU48h1l0Yas8NH-_1IsC1Ss7yKEFVZYT8HlqKAQq9fEU/s400/Fred-400.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723976917814591298" border="0" /></a> </p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> </p>Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-8541963574841144012012-02-21T11:30:00.000-08:002012-02-21T11:34:50.960-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKWsMAQ-QoshKIrLY7bv-0q_aHw-mNQfNp2lbkaICKeBrszmBeuIixVJw1rlP84p3bAE2P5Iye-f4XwyKGVcl1dt6gFOa3SWQbcLqpR-X2lBruVl4pOF1Jh_ncgoQRviHiy9VLedk2Gs/s1600/OldMags-600.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5711673905757826498" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKWsMAQ-QoshKIrLY7bv-0q_aHw-mNQfNp2lbkaICKeBrszmBeuIixVJw1rlP84p3bAE2P5Iye-f4XwyKGVcl1dt6gFOa3SWQbcLqpR-X2lBruVl4pOF1Jh_ncgoQRviHiy9VLedk2Gs/s400/OldMags-600.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>I bought a truck load of old photography magazines a few weeks ago. Being a bit of a history buff and especially the history of technology, I have been enjoying reading the articles from the time that digital photography was being introduced through the transition from film to digital.<br /><br />The month I put all of my 35mm Canon equipment on eBay, because digital had finally passed film in quality, the cover story in Popular Photography was “89 Color Films Compared.” Amazing. The tipping point was a pro-quality 5-meg camera with a lens developed especially for digital, priced under $2000. That was in 2001.<br /><br />One of the basic truths of technology is that the first generation of a new technology is never as good as the well-developed old technology. The only exception I can think of is LPs to CDs. The first CDs were as good as the best LPs of the previous generation. Not better, but just as good.<br /><br />The first automobile fuel injection systems were so bad that GM (after doing the initial development work) gave them to Bosch in Germany because GM thought that fuel injection would never replace carburetors. AT&T invented cell phones and then gave away the technology because they didn’t see any commercial potential. Kodak invented digital photography, but didn’t pursue it because they were in the film business. Kodak had previously passed on the system that would become Xerox because it didn’t fit their idea of photography, so they hadn’t learned their lesson.<br /><br />It took a relatively long time for digital photography to take hold because the first digital cameras were so bad that many “experts” didn’t take them seriously.<br /><br />It is my opinion that just as CDs and digital recording didn’t improve the overall quality of music; digital photography hasn’t improved the overall quality of photographs. But it has certainly increased the accessibility to the average snapshooter. Camera-phones are now replacing point and shoot cameras, just as PS cameras replaced box cameras.<br /><br />However professional and other serious photographers who have taken the time to learn the nuances of digital and the subtle skills of software like Photoshop, have benefited greatly. We can now do things with digital cameras and Photoshop in minutes that it took hours or even days to do with film and chemicals. I know, I owned a successful custom photo lab for 23 years. Many of those darkroom skills I have transferred to the computer and digital imaging. </div>Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-2307620446271546242012-01-30T06:55:00.000-08:002012-01-30T06:57:49.016-08:00The Yellow Father<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSS6qSClwcRqX6VX-aaNKV_j67CDc1H0j54lYDFr-eQq0H_VSTM5qLJUPh6KOhzw8M8Ybx1VU8F3TO1iJZCllgGFl_FnhzjegZzGtTgnYDwBtQu7thltdK8RKMsvIRjMCMHvXhZ93oSRg/s1600/KodakBantamSP-600.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSS6qSClwcRqX6VX-aaNKV_j67CDc1H0j54lYDFr-eQq0H_VSTM5qLJUPh6KOhzw8M8Ybx1VU8F3TO1iJZCllgGFl_FnhzjegZzGtTgnYDwBtQu7thltdK8RKMsvIRjMCMHvXhZ93oSRg/s400/KodakBantamSP-600.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703439343446917074" border="0" /></a><br /><p style="margin-bottom:0px">Last week was a sad one for those of us in the photography industry. The company once known as the "Yellow Father" filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Chapter 11 does not mean that the Eastman Kodak Company is out of business, but if and when it emerges from Chapter 11, it will be a much different and smaller company that it was before.<br /></p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px">When I teach the history of photography, I break photography down into three eras - before Kodak, the Kodak reign, and after Kodak. The twentieth century was the era of roll film and it was dominated by one large company. I can think of no other industry that was so dominated by one company for so long.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> Many of us in the photography business looked upon Eastman Kodak as the benevolent grandfather who could do no wrong. Unfortunately most grandfathers eventually lose touch with the times and need somebody to just make them comfortable in their last days and EK seems to be at that stage.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> George Eastman was a visionary who invented the method of applying photographic emulsion to flexible material. This made possible roll-film that led to the birth of amateur photography. He didn't forget professionals either, making ever higher quality films and papers for both amateur and professional users. </p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> </p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px">The empire he built later invented digital photography and made the first professional quality digital cameras. But this giant "cruise ship" of a company just couldn't navigate the treacherous waters of modern business. I sold my film processing business fifteen years ago when I saw that digital was the future, but fifteen years was not enough time for Kodak to adapt to the new course. </p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> When we look back at the twentieth century, it may very well be that it was the era of the huge corporations. The accelerated pace of change is just not compatible with the way big business was done in the last century. Kodak is just the latest casualty to the old slow way of doing things.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> R.I.P. E.K.C.</p> <p style="margin-bottom:0px"> </p>Jim my first camera for Christmas when I was in the fourth grade. It was a 620 size Sawyer Nomad. I bought a 35mm Kodak Pony when I was in high school.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">When I got to college I became more interested in photography. I was able to buy a 35mm Petri SLR and soon graduated to a Nikkormat. It was there that I set up a darkroom and became proficient with the mechanics of photography. I got very familiar with f-stops, shutter speeds, and film speeds. I bought more cameras and lenses and learned how they worked.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">When I left college in 1971, I got a job at a camera store and was soon the store manager. I was able to go to trade shows and keep up on all the latest equipment and materials.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">When I was 25 years old I opened a custom photo lab catering to professional photographers. I considered myself an expert on the technical issues surrounding photography. My pictures however, though technically good, were never what I hoped for in terms of artistic merit.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">It was not until 1991 on a trip to Italy that I had a breakthrough of sorts. My wife and I spent a lot of time in museums and galleries and I began to see myself as an artist with a camera. I was using a Pentax 645 at the time. The pictures that I brought back from Italy were the best photographs I had ever made. I still have large photos of Italy in my house taken over twenty years ago.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">It is significant to note that from the time that I started becoming serious about photography until I began making really good photographs was about 25 years. In the first half of the 1990’s, I produced some of my favorite photographs.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>I sold the photo lab in 1996 and began perusing other interest. I would take pictures with my 35mm Canon and drop them off at a one-hour photo lab. When I picked them up, as often as not, I would thumb through them and toss them in a drawer or the trash can. I had forgotten that the reason I opened the photo lab back in1973 was the deplorable state of the photofinishing industry at the time, and nothing had really changed. I became so discouraged that I quit taking pictures all together.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In about 1998 I bought a Nikon slide scanner and an Epson printer and began scanning some old slides and negatives and making inkjet prints. They were wonderful and I realized that I still loved photography, but I had to have complete control of the process from the time I clicked the shutter until the prints were made if I was going to get acceptable results.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In 2001 I bought my first digital camera, an Olympus E-20. The camera was marvelous. I immediately put all my 35mm gear on eBay and haven’t shot a roll of film since.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Since then I have upgraded my digital cameras a couple of times and am now using a Pentax K20D. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">In 2008 I decided to get back into photography as a full-time profession. Once again I am making photographs that I am proud of because I can control the whole process. With modern cameras, computers, and printers, this is something that I can do for many years in the future and leave a legacy of great photographs.</p>Jim video image is made up of all shades of gray from black to white and all the colors that go along with them. The goal is for the whites to be white and the blacks to be black with everything in the middle to be in the right place along the scale.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">There are two general ways to do this. One is to start with a white surface such as white paper or canvas and build up pigment or ink to get to black. With good paper and high quality printers or paint, this works great. The opposite approach is to start with a black surface such as a TV or computer monitor and light it up to produce white. This also works very well. In each case how black the screen or how white the paper are big factors in the quality of the image.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">A nearly impossible task is start with a white surface and try to light it to produce a whole range of tones from black to white. This is theoretically impossible and practically very difficult. Movie theaters are able to do this for all practical purposes by darkening the room so that the white screen looks black and then lighting it with the projector. Sometimes a silver screen could be used which is easier to make look black and is more reflective for the white areas, but reflective screens have their own problems such as stray reflections and directionality.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">For this reason the use of video projectors in lighted rooms cannot produce images with an acceptable degree of tonal range no matter how powerful the projector.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">I foresee that video projectors such as currently used will soon go the way of broadcast TV and wired telephones. LCD flat screen video monitors are a much better choice in most situations. The breakthrough that is needed is folding LCD screens. I presume that engineers are already working on this. Stay tuned.</p>Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-48347021562838127852011-06-22T14:47:00.000-07:002011-06-22T14:48:23.817-07:00The pixel race is over<p style="color: rgb(239, 70, 68); font-size: 12pt; margin-bottom: 0px;"><strong> </strong></p>When digital photography first came on the scene, there was a big debate about how many pixels, or picture elements, it would take to make digital photography as good as film. <p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> When the first one million pixel cameras (one-meg) came out it is was very encouraging because we could see that it was going to happen, digital was going to work. Before long two-meg cameras were here producing very good results. Five-meg cameras had the ability to surpass 35mm and were taking aim at medium format. My first digital camera was a five-meg Olympus which I have used to make beautify 16x20 and larger prints. </p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> I like to think of the number of mega-pixels a camera has as being comparable to the horsepower of a car. <span> </span>A minimum amount is needed for sure, but horsepower does not determine the quality of the car or even how fast it will go. There are many other factors that are more important. It is the same with cameras.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> It turns out that after a minimum of about 3 or 4 meg, the number of mega-pixels a camera has is of little value in determining the quality of the photos.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> Now that most cameras have 7 or 8 million pixels or more, this is no longer a factor in quality. In fact many cell phones have 5-meg cameras built-in that produce very low quality pictures, I know, I have one. The quality of the lens and the electronics are much more important. </p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;">Of course the skill of the photography is really the bottom line in determining the quality of the photographs.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0px;"> </p>Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-28912125564984167462011-06-09T14:20:00.000-07:002011-06-09T14:21:54.580-07:00Hold it SteadyIf your pictures are blurry or not as sharp as you would like, the most likely thing is camera movement. If you are firing a rifle at a target and you miss, the only thing that could have happened is you moved the gun.<br /><br />Photography is the same, if you pictures are not sharp, there is a good chance that the camera moved. When I was in the photo-finishing business, the vast majority of the millions of photos I saw were degraded to some degree by camera movement.<br /><br />When I show my large photographs at art shows or people come to my home or studio, they often ask how I get the pictures so sharp. Some people even ask what kind of special equipment I use to make 36 inch wide photos. When I tell them I just hold the camera steady, they think I am joking.<br /><br />When I have one-on-one students, I often teach them how to hold the camera and to practice holding it steady to get better pictures. <br /><br />Part of the problem is the design of the cameras. High performance cameras are designed to make them easier to hold steady with good hand-holds and viewfinders that can be pressed against your face for stability. Poorly designed cameras that must be held at arm's-length or are very light weight are very difficult to hold steady.<br /><br />Just as a rifle is more accurate than a pistol, an eye contact viewfinder is much more accurate than a point & shoot camera with only an LCD screen. Some point and shoot cameras have optical viewfinders, but most don't.<br />Long lenses or zoom lenses zoomed in are harder to hold and low light, resulting in slower shutter speeds, increase the problem.<br /><br />If you want sharper pictures, practice holding the camera steady or buy a camera that is easier to hold.<br /><br />"Can I hold this camera steady?"and "Can I see the viewfinder in all situations?" are the most important questions to ask before buying a new camera.<br /><br />If you are serious about making better photographs, call me to arrange for a day of one-on-one coaching. You can be a better photographer in just one day. The one day cost of $250 is still in affect.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-8148935343759759212011-05-25T14:14:00.000-07:002011-06-09T14:19:27.873-07:00Rule of Thirds<div><br /><div>This is a series of free tips to help you become a better photographer.This week we will talk about the "Rule of Thirds." </div><br /><div>Imagine the frame divided into vertical and horizontal thirds like a tic-tac-toe game. Composition is nothing more than where you put the important parts of the picture in the frame. This implies that you know what is important and what isn't important to the picture, and place the subject accordingly. It also means that you are looking at the whole scene when you line up the shot.Putting the subject in the exact middle of the picture is what we call the "Bullseye syndrome." Ninety-five percent of the time this is exactly the wrong place for the main subject.<br /><br />The main subject should be placed to one side a little or closer to the top or bottom, except in unusual situations.In the two photos below, the one on the right is more interesting because the person's head is off center and leaning toward the edge of the picture.The one on the left is static by comparison because the person's head and eyes are centered like a bullseye.<br /><br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616330219626043458" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 175px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqYvr_0dxIhq7YQIGpCTIS08M0KADg-TFZAZFKrDB3nsUywXiVrQLr9csOFIF9ySY5_Loai3fR7smOydcwQnKa9WQFFfwIGl7Y3MvPX_BEstCNISfKoc5TFNyKINdDAnXtPo1JxHdo0-Y/s400/bullseye.jpg" border="0" /><br />I intend to make this a weekly series, so stayed tuned for more tips and forward this to your camera toting friends.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-92173496279071310672010-06-14T13:59:00.000-07:002010-06-14T14:10:45.513-07:00Hold the camera at arm’s length so it is easy to see.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiO-IBRilBnCK9c_sVlpfJWaFuQtY0WQGTcXo1mEW4NiBu-TrLMkgo-gAshqgITQr_9fYuXnGqo3o1YkazJYZaPcRnHou4D_bY6md6MS47kfabGoIX07FZwSuv2c1OrmrRgA8C4ad0BUE/s1600/HoldingCamera-400.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482738649680114866" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 179px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 210px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiO-IBRilBnCK9c_sVlpfJWaFuQtY0WQGTcXo1mEW4NiBu-TrLMkgo-gAshqgITQr_9fYuXnGqo3o1YkazJYZaPcRnHou4D_bY6md6MS47kfabGoIX07FZwSuv2c1OrmrRgA8C4ad0BUE/s400/HoldingCamera-400.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br />This is the third in a series on the biggest myths in photography.<br /><br /><br />Number 8...<br /><br />"Hold the camera at arm’s length so it is easy to see."<br /><br />I am not sure where this came from, but for some reason or another people, decided that they could see the image better on a little screen than could looking through a viewfinder. Camera manufactures quickly saw that they could save some money by eliminating viewfinders all together on lower priced camera. Today we find ourselves back to the same place where we were 100 years ago with the need to throw a dark cloth over the back of the camera to see the image for framing.<br /><br />LCD screens are very difficult to see in bright light and often impossible to see on a sunny day with sunglasses.<br /><br />Since the beginning of photography, photographers have known that holding the camera steady is the secret to sharp pictures. Without the ability to brace the camera against your face, holding the camera steady becomes very difficult.<br /><br />People often ask me questions about what camera to buy. The first thing I always tell them is to get a camera with a viewfinder. Ideally it would be a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) but an electronic viewfinder is a good second choice. Even a simple optical “window” viewfinder is an improvement over an LCD screen. The LCD screens on the back of the camera are wonderful for reviewing your photos or for some unusual situations, but 99% of the time you should push the camera up to your face to steady it, and to be able to see exactly what you are getting in all kinds of light situations.<br /><div align="center"><em>The proper way to hold a camera is illustrated above.</em></div>Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-52504501842979429872010-06-08T07:27:00.000-07:002010-06-08T07:31:34.356-07:00My pictures are just for fun. I don’t care what happens to them in a year, much less fifty years.This is a second in a series of 10 posts about the biggest myths in photography.<br /><br />Number 9. My pictures are just for fun. I don’t care what happens to them in a year, much less fifty years.<br /><br />Part of my business is restoring old photographs. A common comment I hear is, “I wish my parents (aunt, grandparents, fill in the blank) had taken better care of these pictures. I guess they didn’t know they would be important.”<br /><br />The best known photographer of the twentieth century was Ansel Adams. He was also a musician. He considered making a photograph the equivalent of writing a song – the composition. (Funny how the same word applies to both music and photography.) The print and its display is then the performance. Both were equally important. His photographs now sell for tens of thousands of dollars largely because he put care and technique into making his photographs.<br /><br />We may not be Ansel Adams, but we can value photographs for what they are and take care in the making and keeping of them.<br /><br />The digital age introduces its own challenges of storage and long term use. The important thing to consider is that someday people will be looking at your photos, or not, if you deleted them or lost them when your hard drive crashed, and trying to understand how you lived and what was important to you. Chances are the only record your great grandchildren will have of you is an old photograph or two. I know that because that is the only record I have of some of my great-grandparents.<br /><br />Almost daily somebody will ask me what will happen to all the photos that are never even downloaded from the camera much less printed in some sort of permanent form. The answer is “nothing.” They will be gone in a few years.<br /><br />Were they important? Possibly. Only the future will tell us what we should have saved and could have been discarded.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-38370417217325525512010-06-02T11:45:00.000-07:002010-06-02T12:42:11.467-07:00If I take enough pictures, some of them are bound to be good.<div align="center"><strong>This is a first in a series of 10 posts about the biggest myths in photography. </strong></div><p><br /><strong>Number 10 - If I take enough pictures, some of them are bound to be good.</strong></p><br />This is related to the old saying about given enough monkeys, time, and typewriters, they would eventually write all the works of Shakespeare. Maybe. But it would take a LOT of time and they would go through a lot of typewriters.<br /><br />Photography is a learned skill. It is not hard, but like any other skill such as woodworking, playing a musical instrument, or public speaking, it is not automatic, and therefore requires a little bit of training. Professional instruction is not necessary, but would certainly go a long way.<br /><br />If I decided to build a table, I could go out and buy a saw, some wood, and start randomly cutting wood and gluing pieces together. Given enough time I might end up with something that looks like table. But I would save a lot of time and trees if I did a little research on the details of table making. It is the same with photography. A little care and knowledge goes a long way.<br /><br />The Eastman Kodak Company has been struggling with this conundrum since they brought out the first Kodak in 1888. How do you convince people that anybody can take pictures and still provide enough training that they may actually make some good photos? Generally they have errored on the side of telling people how easy it is, and billions of people have wasted billions of dollars on lousy pictures in the past 120 years.<br /><br />I recently saw an article about this in an 1892 photography journal. The writer was lamenting that people were expecting miracles in their photos without making any effort to become better photographers. In the digital age the incremental cost has gone way down, the quantity of pictures taken has gone way up, but the quality of photos hasn’t changed. If anything they have gotten worse.<br /><br />Having spent 23 years in the photofinishing business, I have seen plenty of pictures that could have been a lot better with only minor changes. Most of the people wanted better pictures but apparently not bad enough to try to learn.<br /><br />Next week Myth # 9.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-15475813006441081212010-04-20T11:01:00.000-07:002010-04-20T11:02:41.093-07:00Give Photographs Some RespectMy mother often comments about how serious I was as a child. I think I just took some things seriously that others regarded as less than serious, things like photos and music. I always took music very seriously, and I always saw the value of photographs.<br /><br />I got my first camera in the fourth grade I knew right away that I was documenting my childhood and that the photographs would be important in fifty or sixty years. I knew this because I knew how important the fifty year-old photos of my parents and grandparents were.<br /><br />Since then I have made somewhere around a million photographs. Tens of thousands of them are in my file cabinets either as negatives, slides, prints, or digital files on CDs. The best ones are in the form of books. Some of them are just documentation while others are very significant, but all of them are important for one reason or another.<br /><br />I have always been concerned that many people haven’t given much respect to photographs. I have made quite a bit of money restoring old photographs, most of which only needed restoration because they were mistreated.<br /><br />In the digital age, it seems that more and more photographs are considered to be free and therefore have no value. There are already anthropologists who fear that we will lose the records of generations because their photos were deleted or lost when the hard-drive crashed.<br /><br />Personally I think that the best photographs will be preserved. But a quick glance at Facebook indicates that most people are not interested in making photographs that are aesthetically or technically pleasing.<br /><br />With modern camera, making wonderful photographs has never been easier, but with ease comes sloppiness. My desire is that people would think, even for just a few seconds about how they could make their pictures better, and then learn some basics about how the camera works. Then the world would look a whole lot better, and future generations would have a better idea of what we cared about, and about how things looked back in 2010.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-86305889024200316002010-01-22T06:09:00.000-08:002010-01-22T06:17:19.027-08:00TestingSomewhere around 1980, I did what I called my “Ultimate Film Test.” Actually it was more than film. I took about 8 or 10 camera and lens combinations, in different formats, and bought a dozen or so rolls each of a half a dozen different types of film. I set up a little still life in my backyard consisting of some flowers, a lawn chair, bird bath and so forth. I then photographed the same scene with every possible exposure and film combination with each camera.<br /><br />The next step was to make identical 8x10 prints from every exposure, carefully labeling each of the hundreds of prints as to the camera, lens, film type, and exposure. By sorting the prints in different ways, I could easily see what difference changing the exposure made, the differences in film types, and the differences in cameras and formats.<br /><br />By using this extensive testing method, I no longer had to rely on other people’s untested opinions, or hearsay. Since at the time I was working with a lot with professional photographers, I could easily bring out clearly documented photographs to show results from the film or camera in question. Very few photographers have ever gone to the trouble and expense to test their equipment and film choices in any significant way.<br /><br />I began repeating this test about every ten years as film and technology changed. It was then possible to clearly show what changes, usually improvements, had taken places with film emulsions, lenses, etc. by comparing older prints with the newer ones. One of the biggest variables was the processing, but since I owned a photo lab, this was a constant.<br /><br />Now in the digital age, it is even more important to test our equipment and techniques. Film, of course, is no longer a factor, but digital technology is changing all the time. The only way to know for sure if a 12-meg camera that costs $1500, set to ISO 1600, will give better results than a 7-meg camera that costs $500 set at ISO 100, is to test them side by side with the same subject and then make identical prints. Instead of film changes we now have a choice of RAW, TIFF, the various versions of JPEG, and so forth. Which works best, and how much difference is there? If we haven’t tested them and can show documented results, we don’t really know. Plus it might be different next year.<br /><br />These principles are true in many other areas as well; except in some fields the testing can be very difficult or the results often hard to interpret.<br /><br />I am also a musician. Testing various types of strings on different guitars, using different amplifiers, cords, picks, and so forth, and actually recording each and carefully analyzing the results is certainly possible, but probably beyond what most musicians are willing to do. Instead we find something we like and stick with it, or we are constantly trying all sorts of variations and never knowing what changed the results.<br /><br />Most businesses follow this latter model. We either stick with what works, or just keep trying things until, hopefully, we find something that does work.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181904345851558035.post-6420068432318911802009-10-14T11:28:00.000-07:002009-10-14T11:34:31.687-07:00What kind of camera should I buy?That is perhaps the most frequently asked question I hear. My usual response is to buy the one you like. By that I mean get one that feels right in your hands and looks like something you will want to carry around.<br /><br />Second, buy the best camera you can afford or spend the most money you feel comfortable spending on a camera. You really do get what you pay for.<br /><br />Beyond that the main consideration, in my opinion, is the viewfinder. The viewfinder is what you will spend your time looking at or through while you are making those beautiful photographs. There are three general types of viewfinders. The best is a single-lens-reflex which means that you are looking through the actual lens that the sensor is looking through. In the digital world the term is DSLR for digital single lens reflex.<br /><br />DSLR cameras are generally the most expensive, but are far and away the most pleasure to use. You almost always see exactly what you are going to get, the original WYSIWYG design. Most have interchangeable lenses for greater versatility. Even if you never change lenses the bigger and brighter viewfinder of a DSLR is worth it. The downside, besides expense, is size. DSLR cameras are bigger and heavier than the other types of digital cameras. Carrying around a DSLR of any brand will mark you as someone who is serious about their photography.<br /><br />The next type of camera/viewfinder is the electronic viewfinder camera or EVF. This type of camera has a LCD screen that is viewed through a magnifier. These cameras are almost as good as a DSLR and are generally smaller and less expensive. The advantage of the EVF camera is that menu items and other information can be read right off the screen in the viewfinder. Most EVF cameras also give an instant preview right after the photo is made so you can see what you got without taking your eye off the viewfinder. Most EVF camera do not offer interchangeable lenses but do have wide range zoom lenses as standard, so this may not be a serious issue. Most video cameras are of this type.<br /><br />The last type of camera is the one that has no viewfinder at all, but only a LCD screen on the back. These have many limitations. The fact that they are hard to see in all but ideal lighting conditions is only one. The secret of sharp photos is to hold the camera steady. Holding the camera steady at arm’s length with no support against your face is almost impossible with this type of camera. I know from experience that an LCD screen is impossible to see in bright snow with sunglasses on, making the camera useless in these or many other conditions. Some companies, such as Hoodman, now are making accessory hoods that fasten to the LCD screen to make them useful in more varied light conditions.<br /><br />Many, if not most, point and shoot cameras, and many more expensive cameras, are eliminating the eye-level viewfinder completely relying only on a LCD screen. This is a big mistake. When purchasing your new digital camera, make sure you can hold the camera up to your eye and see the image clearly through the viewfinder. A good sharp and easy to use viewfinder is the first step in selecting a camera and making great photographs.Jim Mathishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154815417305069684noreply@blogger.com0
